Data privacy is among the main concerns of the global “netizen” (citizen going to the Internet) in the digital area. In fact, in a study from WIN and ESOMAR, across the world, the vast majority of the public claims that they have significant concerns around sharing personal data.

Data Privacy - People concerned
End-of-Year Survey – Win International 2019

Despite the global trend,  only 30% of urban Vietnamese feel any concern about sharing their personal information online. Regionally, it is also ‘one of a kind’ as Vietnamese are much less skeptical about sharing their personal information compared to the Asia-Pacific (APAC – 75%) region.

Urban Vietnamese report not really understanding the usage of their personal data (25%) and 1 out of 3 (34%) even consider that sharing personal information is vital and necessary in the digital world.

In this context, it is important for companies to self-control the proper usage of personal data to gain a competitive edge for respecting the information received from their clients and users.

And they also think that their personal information is not that necessary to be shared online

Vietnamese also do not assess their personal information are valuable when only one third agree with this statement, which is considerably low compared to global (approximately 68%). Again, only one-third of the population thinks that sharing information is vital and necessary in our digitalised and connected world. Ho Chi Minh City seems to be more into this statement compared to Hanoi (37% vs 27%).

Given perspectives, and that only 41% of Vietnamese claim that they have been a victim of data misuse (spam, phishing, email hacks, leaked personal details or bank account/credit card hacks), compared to the ratio of two thirds in Europe and 80% of North America, it is most likely that Vietnamese people seem to face less trouble with data privacy.

Nevertheless, they are still skeptical when sharing their location, as 70% of them do it just sometimes or even rarely and almost never do that. Again, Hanoians are more cautious than Saigoneers, as more claim that they almost never sharing their locations (15% vs 22%).

What about their trust level towards famous companies regarding data privacy?

The study also asked which companies they found trustable among various online platforms. Google (81%) earns the most credibility, followed by Youtube (76%) and Facebook (72%). Meanwhile, the least trusted is Whatsapp (18%), and then Twitter (29%). However, the reason for Whatsapp and Twitter for standing at the bottom of the list might come from the fact that they are among the least used apps in Vietnam, indicated by Statista (2020).

It is beyond the joy that thanks to the perspicacious directives of the Government, and the unanimity of all the country, Vietnam has step-by-step controlled the COVID-19, and is gradually easing the social quarantine. Also, people’s health is guaranteed.

However, the virus has not been completely repelled yet. Therefore, besides strictly implementing the preventive measures, it is also important to have a healthy lifestyle to protect yourself.

Given this reason, Indochina Research would want to share with you a snapshot of the WIN survey result, which explores the views and beliefs of people in Vietnam about health, habits, and food consumption. Fieldwork was done in 2019 by us, and even though it was before the outbreak of the COVID-19, the data can still help us to understand how people feel about their health, as well as their activities to help you reflect on yourself and have timely adjustment.

Compared to 2018, Vietnamese people have made improvements, even small, in their health-related habits. Specifically, people have been drinking less alcohol, exercising more, and are more interested in dieting. The female group possesses a higher percentage of going on a diet (47%, compared to males at 27%).

Health-related Habits

However, there is a habit associated with protecting the lungs, especially in this COVID-19 epidemic, which is smoking, that witnessed no improvement. And male group still have very high rates of smoking – 56%, while 96% female claim that they never smoke. In addition, men tend to drink alcohol more than women (60% compared to 18%)

3. Food consumption habit

Regarding the selection of foods, all Vietnamese people follow the same trend, that is

  • Reduce fast food consumption – 42%
  • Decrease the use of packaged food – 38%
  • Increase the use of organic food +35%
  • Cut down on eating sweets – 34%
  • Increase the selection of low-fat/ low sugar  foods + 20%

Young people aged 18-30 years old tend to be less health-conscious as the 30-year-old and older group, since they increased their consumption of packaged foods, as well as of sweets and fast food.

We hope that you will find effective ways to improve your health and stay safe through this COVID-19 period!

The Impact of COVID-19 on companies

Coronavirus impact on business – Keynotes

The results of the survey come from a wide variety of companies (n=116) established in Vietnam, working mostly in the tertiary (73%) and secondary sectors (23%).

1. The impact on business

  • All respondents anticipate a loss in revenue. For half of them, the loss is estimated for at least 30% this year.
  • Among the problems arising from the crisis, international mobility and cash flow are the most mentioned. Large firms are more impacted by procurement limitations.
  • Companies are facing high risks of order delays or cancellations (68%), the cash flow requirement (60%) and for one-third their survival is at stake.
  • About half of the respondents consider cash flow to be a threat to their company in the coming 3 months and 10% are facing it in the very short term (1 month).
  • The anticipated need for cash flow: €10 million by the end of June, growing to €20 million by the end of 2020.

2. Operational measures taken by companies

  • All respondents have implemented a number of measures to protect their employees and adjust their activity. Remote work (74%), canceling business trips (70%) and enforcing prevention measures (50%) are the main ones.
  • If staff dismissal measures are only now taken by a few companies (17%), almost half are already considering some potential layoffs. The higher intentions of layoffs are in the service sector (tourism, retail and business service).
  • Most companies (75%) had yet to approach the authorities for support at the time of the survey.
  • The measures considered of the highest interest are the delay or cancellation of PIT, VAT, SI, and CIT. Cancellation of PIT would indeed benefit both employers and employees by supporting the economy with increased consumption once the activity restarts.

3. Supports from the Governmemt

In March 2020, Gallup International Association has conducted a snap poll about the world perception of the Coronavirus.

The research was conducted during the first two weeks of March to understand what people think about the Coronavirus, as well as how it is perceived to affect the nations worldwide. The snap poll involved almost 25,000 people from 28 countries including some of the most affected, such as Italy, the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, Korea, France, Germany, Switzerland, etc. and also countries where the virus had yet to “show off” its peril.

****

Coronavirus – Keynotes

1. How is the virus perceived to have emerged?

For most people, the Covid-19 results from a natural emergence. However, in some countries, such as Bulgaria, Armenia, North Macedonia, and Ecuador, more people believe that it has been deliberately spread.

2. Are people worried to get infected by the Coronavirus?

A majority of people (67%) are afraid of the infection. Unsurprisingly, Italians – where the Coronavirus is raging, fears it the most, with 90% of the citizens being worried about catching it, similarly to Indonesian where the virus is spreading less virulently.
On the contrary, Germans, Swiss, Afghans are Americans were less worried about catching the virus at the time the survey was conducted.

3. Do people think it is a deadly virus?

For countries whose number of cases keeps on climbing, such as France, Italy, The Netherlands, the United Kingdom, the answer is, without a doubt, “Yes”. The number of officially declared infected people clearly plays a significant role in this regard.
However, there are still some countries where people find the problem is exaggerated. It’s the case in Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia (73%) and in Bulgaria (72%).

4. How do people assess their Government’s effort in dealing with this pandemic?

Most of the surveyed population (61%) think their government is handling the situation well. The Austrian Government receives the highest level of satisfaction (88%) from its population, followed closely by India (83%), Palestine (80%) and The Netherlands (79%).
The less satisfied populations with their Government are the Thai (76% of disagreement) and the Japanese (62% of disagreement).  In the US, more surveyed citizens (46%) consider their Government is not handling the problem well than others (42%).

5. Would people be willing to sacrifice some of their human rights to help prevent the spread of the virus?

Given the great fear towards the Coronavirus, three-quarters of the surveyed population would agree to be deprived of some of their liberties until the threat of Covid-19 is gone. This is especially true in Austria (95%), Netherlands (94%) and Italy (93%). However, it is more surprising to see that even in countries where the Coronavirus danger is believed to be exaggerated, namely Bosnia and Herzegovina (88%) and North Macedonia (94%), their population would also be willing to sacrifice.
From another viewpoint, in Japan with 48% who disagree and 19% who hesitate, and in the United States with 38% who disagree and 16% who hesitate, their population seem to still prioritise their human rights.

6. What will the future be like?

Overall, the situation is considered hard to foresee exactly, and each country has its own prediction. Gradually losing control over the spread of the Coronavirus, the majority of people in the United Kingdom (82%) pessimistically think that the worst is yet to come. In the second epidemic center of the world, Italy feels uncertain about what to expect but more tend to keep optimistic: 43% Italian think that the worst is yet to come, while 45% believe that things will begin to improve.
Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Turkey, and Armenia stand top among the most optimistic populations when talking about the future. Korea is the 5th most optimistic after having faced an important spread that is now looking under control.

7. What measures do people take to protect themselves?

In general, people are washing their hands more frequently as the most employed action to prevent the Coronavirus (78%) spread.
Wearing a medical mask is only adopted by 33% of the global population, but this measure is taken more seriously in Asian countries such as Korea and Thailand where the population is more accustomed to wearing masks.
A majority of respondents (54%) were still not determined to stay home, more specifically in Turkey (89%), Pakistan (80%) and Afghanistan (66%). Only 14% declare taking self-quarantines measures to protect themselves or their family.
Worryingly, 9% still claimed not taking any action so far.
