Pet ownership in Vietnam is on the rise, with more people embracing furry and feathered companions in their homes. The 2025 Pet Ownership Report by Indochina Research Vietnam provides valuable insights into pet trends across four key cities in the country.

1. Popular Pets in Vietnam
Dogs are considered the most beloved pets, with cats also enjoying high popularity. Many households also keep birds, fish, and other small pets, reflecting diverse preferences in pet companionship. Our survey indicates that approximately 7 out of 10 pet owners have a dog, making them the most common pets in Vietnamese households, while about 3 out of 10 own a cat.
2. Pet Ownership Across Regions
Southern regions, especially Ho Chi Minh City, have higher pet ownership rates compared to other parts of the country. In Ho Chi Minh City, around 25% of residents own a pet, highlighting a thriving pet culture. Hanoi and Da Nang also show interest in pet ownership, though at slightly lower rates of 18–19%.
3. Family Dynamics and Pet Ownership
Households without children tend to have more pets, possibly due to a more flexible lifestyle. Families with children also enjoy the benefits of pet companionship, though ownership rates vary based on household dynamics. Our study reveals that 3 out of 10 child-free households own at least one pet, demonstrating the impact of lifestyle and family structure on pet adoption.
4. Pets and Well-Being
Owning a pet has been linked to positive emotional and mental well-being. Many pet owners report feeling happier and more energetic, underscoring the benefits of having a furry friend. In fact, 84% of pet owners say they feel more energized and positive in their daily lives. Pets provide companionship, help reduce stress, and promote a more active lifestyle.
5. Multi-Pet Households
While many households own a single type of pet, 11% of households across key cities are opting for multiple pets, particularly a combination of dogs and cats, showcasing their harmonious coexistence.
Conclusion
Pet ownership in Vietnam continues to evolve, influenced by a growing middle class, lifestyle changes, and increasing awareness of the benefits pets bring to daily life. As more people embrace pet companionship, trends in pet ownership will likely continue to shift in exciting ways. With dogs and cats remaining the top choices, the future of pet culture in Vietnam looks vibrant and dynamic.
